It wasn’t that long ago that you couldn’t even watch a motion picture in your home. Then along came the knowledge that brought us Videocassette recorder’s and videos and now watching a film in the coziness of your own home is ordinary. These days you can even download films directly to your computer.

Right now there are many completely legal and reputable sites that will allow you to download unabridged, first-class films directly to your computer. Most of them charge a fee, either a membership cost that allows for unlimited downloads for a fixed amount of time or a pay per download cost.

Along with the lawful sites, however, there are quite a few illegal sites that offer to allow you to download movies for free. The bulk of these free movies are illegally copied copies. The quality of the screening is not promised and you may be receiving more than you asked for in the form of viruses, adware and malware.

In this country there are copyright laws that let the creators of the work to be rewarded for it. Most movies are copyrighted unless they were originally appropriated to the public domain. Very few movies are old enough to have reverted back to the public domain and the only movies that would be obtainable on the public domain are the films that did not get the obligatory renewal on their copyright.

That means that the sizable bulk of the modern films or even most of the wonderful films from the past 40 years are most likely still under copyright. When you download a bootleg duplicate from the Internet you are violating copyright law. You could even be risking prosecution.

After January 1, 1978 any work, such as movies, that was produced is necessarily copyright protected for the span of the author’s life, plus an additional 70 years later than death. In the improbable instance of an unnamed work the copyright is still in effect for 95 years from initial publication or 120 years from creation, whichever is least. Regardless, every film that you want to download is copyright protected.

If you are downloading illegally copied movies for free of charge you are breaking the law. That may or may not be enough of a disincentive to stop you, but with the free of charge sites you also take the risk of viruses and computer tribulations, not to mention that the quality of the motion picture is not promised.

The lawful sites will offer virus protection for your computer. They have a license to vend the film making it permissible and they can supply you with premium, whole films at a sensible cost. It is wise to only download from a legal and trustworthy site.
